18 Things I’ve Learned by 18

This is a post I have had in mind for a while now. I wanted to do something like this last year, but I wanted to wait till senior year was over because I knew it would be a year full of learning (it was btw). Now it’s finally the perfect time to write it… I just turned 18, and just graduated from high school!!! These are the most important things I have learned and some of the best pieces of advice I have gotten over the past 18 years.

  1. Don’t be too hard on yourself – In the beginning of high school I was so hard on myself and every mistake I made or if one thing didn’t go my way I would freak out. Towards the end of high school, I realized just make everything a learning lesson, and move on! (it probably wasn’t a big deal anyways)
  2. Be friends with people who build you up – Friendship is hard, and finding those friends can seem even harder sometimes. The people you are close with effect you more than you would think, so having encouraging and supportive friends is important. I didn’t learn this till senior year, but having a community that builds you up and have the same morals as you is life changing.
  3. Take a bath – These are the best honestly. Get in the bath, relax, and watch some Netflix! I love having little spa nights and doing a face mask and just doing nothing… it’s just what you need sometimes!
  4. Go on a walk with your friends – I have just started doing this the past few weeks and I love it. I have been going on long walks with my friends by the water and it makes my day 10x better. It gives you time to catch up, enjoy the outdoors, and get some exercise.
  5. Be open to meeting new people – This can be hard for people, and it used to be for me! I have learned that meeting new people and making new friends can be the blessing you need. You never know what could happen, and they could end up being your best friend.
  6. Find music that gets your excited for the day – Waking up is soooo hard, especially when its by an alarm clock early in the morning, so having a playlist that gets you excited and ready for the day really helps. Here is mine!
  7. Be confident in your own skin – If I am being honest, I really don’t think I was completely comfortable being myself around everyone till the last few months of senior year. It makes life so much better! God made you just how you are, so be you and embrace it!
  8. Sometimes a win is really a lose, and sometimes a lose is really a win – My dad told me this, and it’s the best advice I have ever gotten. My dad told me this after my last tennis match of high school. It was a four hour match and was really hard physically and mentally (basically I was crying the whole time haha). Anyways the girl I was playing wasn’t playing fair so loosing in such a close match my senior year was really hard. After the match my dad told me this and I think it is so true! I lost the match, but I learned a lot about myself and the type of person I wan to be!
  9. Spend time with your family – I am so lucky because most of my family lives in the same town as me, so I get to see them all the time. Since I am going to college in a couple months, I am really trying to not take them for granted and spend a lot of time with them because pretty soon we won’t just be 15 minutes away from each other. Spend time with them, while y’all are both around!
  10. Join a small group and church – About two years ago I started going to 3 circle in Fairhope, and then beginning of senior year I joined a small group. Having that constant community and church family has made a bigger impact on me than I would have ever thought. God has worked in me though those people, more than anything else in my life. Please please please just get involved!
  11. Sometimes just driving around with your friends is the move – This is something I am really going to miss in college. When there is nothing to do my friends and I usually just end up driving around talking and listening to our favorite songs. Usually at the time, we wish their was something more to do but just doing nothing and spending time with your friends ends up being fun!
  12. Be careful when you drive – This one goes along with the previous one. Driving around can be fun, but be careful! This is one I am constantly working on… if you know me, you know I am not the best driver. Always gotta be paying attention and be careful!
  13. Having alone time doesn’t make you a loser – I have found out about myself that I really value my alone time and need it to function. Some of my friends can just go go go without ever stopping. As much as I can try to be like that, I am definitely not. If I don’t have my alone time, its bad news! I used to think I was a looser and not social, but now I realized it’s just how I am. Sometimes you just need the time by yourself and that okay!
  14. Appreciate the little things – I LOVE the little things. It just makes life better. Appreciate all the little things that make you happy! One for me is yellow gatorade. It’s the best and anytime I have one it just makes my day better. Go find the yellow gatorades in your life
  15. Don’t be embarrassed to cry – If you know me, you know I am a crier. I know some people are embarrassed to cry, but at this point in my life I really don’t care and will cry in front of literally everyone. I am emotional person, so I just embrace it! Tears don’t just weakness, don’t be afraid to let it out!
  16. Dance all the time – I love dancing, but I am so bad like actually terrible. I have learned its okay!! Just dance, make up your own moves, and teach them to other people because who cares! It makes life more fun
  17. Find something that can always make your day better – We all have bad days, so find something that can make you a little happier and make your day better. For me, it’s my favorite coffee from Soul Caffine. It can be a coffee like mine or a whole meal, whatever you want! Every once in a while you just need something like that to pick you up.
  18. Give all your love – Loving others and showing kindness is the best thing we can do!! You don’t have enough room in your lifetime for anything else. It can be hard but why waste your time on being angry or hold grudges on people, when you can just choose to love them instead!

This is adorable! I am so happy that you have learned this before 18. Some of us don’t realize half of these things as adults. — and YES, Dance all the time!
